How Many?
The newest little nugget to come out of these important debates about freedom to be an offensive fool and freedom to force your religion on others is this idea that it's all the fault of extremists. That's what is not entirely true, if the images we see on tv are to be believed. I mean, I can only assume that in any society extremists are in the minority. The idea of extremism seems to indicate a certain rarity of presence. It was not just a few people who took part in the protests that turned into embassy burnings. Let's admit that it is a large part of the population in many countries that is taking part in the violence going on in the world. It's not just extremists.

Blaming everything on the extremists doesn’t wash with me either. The only way that an extremist group can exist in a given country is if it is supported or at the very least tolerated by both the government and the people. When hate groups in the States (neo-Nazis ALM etc.) do more then run off some photocopies of hate propaganda the US government throws them in jail.
What really kills me is that most of these Islamic extremist groups are receiving millions of dollars in funding form the oil rich nations in the Middle East (mostly Saudi Arabia). Now correct me if I’m wrong, but if a military group is supported and financed by a countries government doesn’t that make it a national army.
Okay, what's ALM? I did a quick google search but I doubt you're referring to Adults Learning Mathematics, or American Leprosy Missions.
I don't know that I can say with asurity that the money terrorist groups get is from governments. I believe whole-heartedly that they are getting lots of oil money, but I cling to the hope that private citizens are the ones doing the giving.
I heard of the ALM many years ago. It stood for American Liberation Movement or something like that. It was a hate group that wanted to “liberate” America from of all the minorities. However, I spent about fifteen minutes searching yahoo and found absolutely no reference to the group. I guess that they must have faded into obscurity and disappeared. I don’t know, maybe they tried to do more than pass out pamphlets and got arrested. Hell maybe I got the acronym and the name wrong.
It’s a fairly well known fact that the Saudi Royal Family gives millions of dollars to extremist groups and the Saudi Royal Family is the Saudi Government. Muammar Qadhafi is also well known for providing terrorists not only with money but with training facilities in Libya.
Quite an interesting link!
However, I think most such devices are at the planning stage. Maybe come in in 20-30 years.

I really don't agree with that. We tend to sterotype people. We would think Iran is a backward fundamentalist country.
1) The young people are very differnt.
2) Modern and rational.
3) As a matter of fact the engineering department has more Iranian women than men!
