ICEland

How is it that in a country called Iceland there is so little done to clear snow out of streets and sidewalks? I don't think I've ever seen a snowblower here. The only snowplows one sees with regularity are running back and forth on the highway. This year, for the first time, someone in a big red tractor has been nice enough to work very hard at attempting to clear our town. But I couldn't drive into the parking lot at school because the snow was too deep. I don't get it.

They don’t do much to clear the snow over here in Korea either. Of course we usually don’t get much snow and it usually doesn’t last more than a couple of days. However, this year we had record snow fall and record colds so the unplowed snow on the streets was packed into giant sheets of ice by the cars. The government tried to clear the ice with back hoes and earth movers and then gave up after one day. After almost a month we finally had a couple of days warm enough to melt it all.

Right now it's raining buckets out there. Hopefully most people who go out today will make it home in one piece. Water on top of ice is one thing that studded tires can't deal with! I stayed home today.
